Description

I’ve heard therapists say that while they recommend journaling to their clients, they themselves aren’t clear on how to guide their clients’ writings or what to do with the writings afterwards.

In this workshop, we will explore a few options for thinking about therapeutic writing “beyond journaling.” We will experiment with various poetry forms and narrative exercises which can supplement traditional journaling practices or provide alternatives to standard retelling of literal experiences.

We will write with objects, create short poems, and play with narrative dialogue as a means of personal narrative exploration and reflection so you can gain a clearer picture of therapeutic writing tools.

This is an experiential workshop, so bring your notebooks, pens, and plenty of curiosity to see how Creative Writing for Therapeutic Purposes may find a place in your personal and professional practice.

Living in Switzerland having come from elsewhere, or with family from other cultural regions, brings a unique blend of experiences that can be difficult for others or even ourselves to understand let alone express. From languages and weather and landscape to dress and food and music, faith and holidays: everything that can make us feel connected to a community can also make us feel not quite ourselves anywhere. But life moves forward and we try to adapt. Yet it would be nice to be able to express the ins and outs and ups and downs of living a life of blended cultures.

In this 90-minute workshop, with guided writing prompts and creative exercises, you will use words, stories, and imagery to explore and express your life in Switzerland with your heart reaching in many directions across the globe.

No writing experience is needed.

Just bring a pen and some paper along with a curiosity to explore your own stories in new, imaginative ways. Together we will listen and write and share our words, though sharing is not required.

This will be a time you can offer yourself, to express your personal experience, and to be heard.

In this workshop, we will:

  • begin with a grounding exercise
  • listen to an excerpt of writing and reflect on the day’s theme
  • do a short bit of writing to warm up to the blank page
  • experiment with writing prompts to spark creative exploration and expression
  • have time to share from our writing or thoughts on the writing experience
  • close with another bit of grounding and final thoughts
